Family Entertainment with Flair!

by Steve Dana

Last Saturday night, Noreen and I attended an event held in the new gymnasium at Everett Community College.  It was well attended even though it was not sold out.  The atmosphere was like a rock concert since half the attendees appeared to be in costume.

The event was a competition between skilled athletes; four teams of them.  It was a tournament of sorts.

The teams had names like Camaro Harem, Pink Pistols, CarnEvil and Hula Honeys.  You can probably tell these teams are all “ladies”.  Some of the ladies had unusual names too.  The Camaro Harem team had one named Ivana Hercha; Pink Pistols had one called Sierra Fist, CarnEvil had one called Luna C Mental and Hula Honeys had one called Morticia Militia.

That’s right, we attended Roller Derby.  The Jet City Roller Girls had a double bout match last Saturday night and it was like going to old fashion wrestling.  It was like attending the circus.  The folks in the stands were almost as entertaining as the ladies on the track.

I don’t know how many seats there are in the gymnasium, but most of them had butts in them.

There are two main groups of roller derby players in our market.  The Rat City Roller Girls which are more Seattle oriented and our home market Jet City Roller Girls.

If you are looking for an evening of entertainment and excitement check them out.  I looked up their web address.  http://www.jetcityrollergirls.com/ .  Take a look for yourself and give them a try.  Generally speaking, this is not the kind of entertainment I go for, but the place was packed with families.  The names of the ladies are all unusual, but they are all about competition and camaraderie.  I would liken the event to a really unusual family reunion.

The amazing thing about roller derby is the fact that as crazy as the atmosphere is, most of these folks have normal day jobs.  You might even be working alongside one.

The next home event for these teams will be April 9th at Everett Community College gymnasium down where the old Tyee Bowling Ally was.  This event is a benefit for Deaconess Children’s Services.

If you are looking for a great night of entertainment, give them a try.  The sport may be roller derby, but these ladies are great skaters who can take a hit and deliver one too.
